Distance Education

Lateral Entry

A lateral entry license entitles the holder to be employed as a teacher in North Carolina schools while completing remaining coursework and requirements for a NC teaching license. Lateral entry licenses are authorized on a provisional basis in major areas of academic study for which the state has established licensure.  Please review the RALC's licensure areas and relevant degrees. At UNC Asheville, we work with the Regional Alternative Licensing Center.  Potential candidates contact their RALC representative who will advise the candidate about meeting necessary criteria and establish a plan of study.  We design courses to help you meet the competencies outlined in your plan of study provided by RALC.  We are currently offering courses that satisfy the general pedagogy requirement through distance education.  We are also beginning the sequence of courses needed for Special Education General Curriculum Licensure which will also be provided through distance education.  Additional courses are available as a non-degree seeking student through other university departments.  A  complete listing of courses offered at UNC Asheville that have been approved for RALC are available. UNC Asheville will be offering the courses required for lateral entry certification in Special Education General Curriculum through the Regional Alternative Licensing Center in a two year cycle.  General Pedagogy courses are offered in a one-year cycle.
